Lévis, Québec, February 16th 2015: Davie, Canada’s largest shipbuilder, welcomes Prime Minister Harper’s impetus, announced last week, for manufacturing businesses in the Québec City region.
Alan Bowen, CEO of Davie commented “The Prime Minister’s comments resonated well with Davie and its staff. Davie is a good example of the kind of cutting edge, dynamic and entrepreneurial company, creating jobs and widespread economic benefits in this vibrant region, that the Prime Minister is speaking of.”
Over the past two years, Davie has invested significantly in the marine sector, creating over 1,000 new jobs, generating significant economic benefits for the region and attracting major foreign investment in commercial shipbuilding programs. This led to the successful delivery of Canada’s largest single export in 2014.
Bowen explained that the federal government played a significant role in ensuring the success of Davie, “This week we will find out whether we have been awarded the prestigious title of ‘North American Shipyard of the Year 2015’ at the Lloyd’s List North American Maritime Awards in Houston. The federal government has worked side-by-side with the management at Davie to ensure the success we are witnessing today. Recently that has meant the export finance of ships, which has put Davie at the forefront of the global specialized shipbuilding industry, as well as the award of two Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker refit contracts”.
